Estimation
Estimation is always a guess and most guesses are wrong. That doesn't mean estimation is bad, it can support the team's ability to confirm their shared understanding of work and support your Product Owner's ability to answer the "how long and how much?" question that is part of their role. In this section, we want to give learners the tools they need to perform effective and efficient estimation using Affinity Sizing and Planning Poker.
There are no slides for this section The learners should have completed the Scrum Launchpad Estimation module prior to this session. Review that module to understand how the content is delivered. Be sure to check in with your producers to understand if any learners failed ot complete the learning. It is up to you as a trainer to determine how you will handle those learners.
Outcomes
- Learners understand Agile estimation
- Learners understand relative/affinity sizing
- Learners grasp the basics of planning poker
Activities
-
Affinity sizing (10 min)
-
Planning Poker Breakout Session (12-15 min)
Outline
Affinity Sizing
1. You may want to drive Miro for efficiency. You will use the Affinity sizing activity board for this activity.
2. Pick 3 volunteers and remember the order they volunteered. You will use that to order their participation.
3. Create a reference story (Human) and add that to the Medium
4. Then call on your first volunteer, they can only move something from the backlog to a place on the board.
5. The next person can either move an item that was placed or move something from the backlog. If they move something that was placed previously, add a tick mark to the card.
6. If you move an item more than a couple of times, instruct the learners to have a quick conversation to determine where they will place the card.
7. At the end, teach them how to assign Fibonacci numbers to the cards and use Velocity to answer how long their backlog will take.
Planning Poker
Planning Poker is a breakout activity. Your learners will estimate a series of Lego sets using Planning Poker.
Instruct your learners in how to perform planning poker using the Planning Poker activity board. Get them to either use poker.sigao.io, their hands, or the Miro board to register their votes. Direct your learners to the How to Play Planning Poker handout to learn the rules.
Be sure to check in on your learners when they are in the breakout room to ensure things are going smoothly.
After the breakout, be sure to recap by asking things that went well, things that were difficult, and facilitating a conversation.
